The Gold Standard Preparation and Application of SmartColor™
Before the experienced, highly trained installers at Lifetyme Exteriors begin applying SmartColor, your home will receive the necessary preparation to ensure the life of the coating. This may include some minor carpentry work (which would be discussed with you and factored into your free estimate) depending on the individual needs of your home. This could be replacing some trim or a few rotted clapboards, or adding a decorative molding at your request. Sometimes, there is no necessary carpentry at all. Regardless, scraping and sanding will be done to prepare the surface for the SmartColorä application process.
The process, or the order of the steps in the process, may differ slightly depending on your circumstances. This overview serves to educate you about SmartColor application and Lifetyme Exteriors’ commitment to quality from start to finish.
1. Pressure-Wash
The first step in the process is to power-wash your home with our proprietary Smart Wash exterior house wash to remove any existing dirt, grime and/or mildew from its surface. It is the first ever product designed specifically to wash the exterior of a house. Rather than using (maybe) some bleach like most painters, our washing is specialized for YOUR home’s exterior. This process allows our primer maximum adhesion, and sets the groundwork for a smooth finished look once the entire process is complete.

2. Scraping & Sanding
Once the wash is complete, our crew will return to begin work on the removal of the existing paint and stain on your home’s exterior. Some houses require more aggressive scraping and sanding, depending on its condition, but regardless this is where a great deal of time and labor is spent on getting your house ready for the following phases.
3. Wood Replacement
Our crew will check around your home for wood rot. Any rotted or questionable boards will be replaced, to ensure a long lasting and aesthetically pleasing finished product. Our products are the best that money can buy, but if we are installing them on rotted wood they will not last. We will make sure your wood is in good condition before moving ahead.

4. SealSmart™ Caulking
When the surface of your home is clean, we will use our SealSmart around doors, windows, and any other areas with cracks that might otherwise allow moisture to get through. SealSmart is a superior, industrial quality sealant made to last as long as SmartColorä, and can also be used to fill in unsightly cracks or crevices.
5. Prep Walk-Around
Once the preparation work is complete, you will be asked to walk around the house with our crew foreman to verify that this work has been done to your satisfaction. Only after this has been done will our workers move forward with the subsequent steps in our SmartColor process.
6. SmartPrime™
Once your home is washed scraped, sanded and sealed, we will be ready to apply SmartPrime, our primer and bonding agent. This can be sprayed, brushed, or rolled on depending on the surface material and area to which it is being applied. Once this step is complete, you are well on your way to an attractive and protective new exterior!
7. SmartColor™
Once SmartPrime has been applied, we will be ready to transform your home using the color of your choice (we offer over 1500 colors, as well as custom color matching). Like SmartPrime, SmartColor can be sprayed, brushed, or rolled on depending on the surface material and area to which it is being applied. This layer goes on 8 to 10 times thicker than standard paint, and will give your house a freshly painted look, but will not crack, chip, peel or fade like standard paint!
8. Clean-Up and Final Walk-Around
Even when our crew has finished applying SmartColor, your job is not done yet. All trash and construction materials will be removed, and the property surrounding your home will be left just as it was when we arrived- sometimes better! Once the clean-up has taken place, a crew foreman or member of our production department will join you for a walk-around to confirm that all work was completed to your satisfaction. You will then be asked to complete our Job Completion & Customer Satisfaction Form. Only then will your job be considered finished, and we will leave you to soak up the compliments on your fresh exterior from your friends and neighbors.
